When does his family become my family?

….and vice versa….

On Saturday night O’s sister and her husband had a baby boy.

So O is an Uncle for the first time.

O doesn’t regard himself as an Uncle to my niece and nephew – they were born a good while before O and I got together but hopefully over time he will get closer to them. They currently think he is great anyway because he is a big kid that they can't exhaust.

And I'm an Aunty again, feels strange for me, it being on the other side of the family. I don't distinguish between my own Aunts and Uncles, those who are blood related and those related through marriage. I guess it just takes a while to get used to.

Not only has the new arrival got me thinking about the familial boundaries merging but this coming weekend is going to be HUGE for us. Our parents are going to meet each other for the first time and I’m crapping my pants, much more than when I introduced O to my parents for the first time. I have no idea if they are going to get on and I keep dreaming up all the horrible ways it could go wrong. So come on bloggers tell me your experiences how was the big parental meet up for you? Tell me it is all going to be ok!

  1. I'm sure your parents will get along just fine, they're going to WANT to get along for your sake! So they'll be working that much harder on it...for instance, my mom and my FMIL are pretty much opposites, and FMIL really gets on my mom's nerves...but you would have no idea, because she wants the relationship to be a good one to make things easier for me, you know? I think it'll work out beautifully!

  2. I think everything will go well. I think people are generally "on their best behaviour" in these situations and want it to go well for their kids. Hoping it all goes super!

  3. our parents get on fine, obviously it was all very polite when tey first met, but every time my parents came to stay we would troll off down the hill to see the in laws, and when my parents moved up here, James mum and I drove over after a couple of weeks to see the house. It'll all go swimmingly, dont worry. xx

  4. I'm sure everything will go well. I'd like to say that based on experience, but we've been dating since high school, so there was no monumental parents meeting day. It just happened casually. But they've been getting along great since then. I think Chocolate Lover is, I'm sure everyone will be on their best behavior.

  5. Oh the meeting of the parents. So nerve wracking. I worried and worried. Our parents are very different but get on just fine. The best thing we did was by accident. We were still getting ready upstairs when his parents arrived and they just introduced themselves. Heaven and easy!

  6. You poor thing! Scary scary. I am sure it will go fine though. Every one will be on best behavior and wanting to make good impressions. Best of luck.

And congrats on the new nephew.

  7. its funny you write this because I just realised that my boyfriend is an uncle! (we've been together 7 years and its only just sunk in!) and that if we ever got married I would be an aunt! i doubt anyone would think of me as that though lol

I cant remember when our first parents met - luckily they get on really well though. try not to worry too much about it, I'm sure they will try hard for your sakes to get on x

  9. Don't think I can help on this one much... as my Dad's girlfriend only met my OH's parents at my birthday last year and I'd already thought they'd met years ago! (They've been together years and my OH had already asked her to be his 'official' mother-in-law!)

Anyway, I'm sure it will go fine - even if it is making me think of meet the fockers! ;)
